KVK as an integral part of NARS

Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) is a planned project of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi and an integral part of the National Agricultural Research System (NARS) of country. It aims at assessment of location specific technology modules in agriculture and allied enterprises, through technology assessment, refinement and demonstrations. KVKs have been functioning as Knowledge and Resource Centre of agricultural technology supporting initiatives of public, private and voluntary sector for improving the agricultural economy of the district and the NARS with extension system and farmers. The KVKs works at the grass root level with a district as its operational area. At present the country has 731 KVKs working under diversified organizations like ICAR institutes, State Agriculture Universities, NGOs, Public sector units, educational institutes like Central Universities and others. According to FAO of the United Nations KVKs are one of the institutional innovation of the 21st Century. It is one of the largest extension network in the World which organizes adaptive trials at the lowest level of the community.

Establishment of KVK-Lakshadweep

KVK-Lakshadweep is administered by ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Cochin. The KVK is situated in the capital town Kavaratti (10.5593° N, 72.6358° E) of Union Territory Lakshadweep islands. The KVK was established in 1999 and at first hosted by Department of Agriculture, UT Administration of the island. Later the KVK was hosted by (ICAR-CIARI) and at present under the administrative control of ICAR-CMFRI. Since 2019 activities of KVK have been carried out as per the approved action plan of ATARI, Zone VIII, Bengaluru.

Host Organisation – CMFRI

The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), established in 1947, is headquartered in Kochi, Kerala. It functions under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). CMFRI conducts research on marine fisheries, mariculture, and sustainable resource management. It supports policy-making with scientific data and promotes climate-resilient fisheries. The institute has several regional centers along the Indian coastline.

ATARI ZONE XI

ICAR–ATARI Zone XI, located in Bengaluru, coordinates agricultural extension activities in Karnataka, Kerala, and Lakshadweep. It was established as ATARI in 2015 and renamed Zone XI in 2017. The institute oversees 48 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in the region. Its main role is to support technology dissemination and frontline extension in agriculture. It functions under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
