Marine Ornamental Fish Hatchery

A state-of-the-art recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) based marine ornamental fish hatchery unit is being established in Kavaratti by ICAR-CMFRI and KVK Lakshadweep under the NCDC-PMSSY scheme (2021) to boost sustainable aquaculture and income diversification. Equipped with 48 brooder tanks, the facility can produce up to 24,000 larvae of high-value ornamental species. This modern hatchery ensures optimal breeding conditions with minimal water use. Over 50 local youth and fishers have been trained in advanced broodstock management and larval rearing. The unit aims to serve as a commercial hub, promoting entrepreneurship while exploring direct market linkages with mainland aquarium enthusiasts and exporters for long-term economic growth.
