PKVY Project Lakshadweep Achieves Organic Certification Under PKVY

In a landmark achievement, Lakshadweep was declared 100% organic in 2021 under the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) through the Large Area Certification (LAC) scheme. The journey began in 1999 with traditional practices in coconut and fisheries, leading to a complete ban on chemical inputs by 2005. In 2021, 9,000 farmers from all 10 inhabited islands were certified organic under the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS), coordinated by KVK-Lakshadweep and the Department of Agriculture. With certification enabling national organic marketing, continued support through technological interventions aims to boost branding, income and global recognition of Lakshadweep’s organic produce.
