The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) is situated in the island agro-climatic zone of Lakshadweep, characterized by a tropical climate with minimal variation between mean summer and winter temperatures. The KVK serves a population of 64,473 across 10 inhabited islands, each functioning as individual administrative blocks. Coconut is the principal crop, followed by banana, colocasia, drumstick, breadfruit, and wild almonds. Recently, terrace gardening using soilless media in grow bags has gained popularity, enabling the cultivation of vegetables such as tomato, brinjal, okra, and leafy greens. The island’s agriculture is predominantly coconut-based, offering substantial opportunities for marketing dried coconut and producing value-added products. Additionally, the region boasts rich marine fisheries resources, making the local economy largely dependent on coconut and tuna. Tourism, leveraging these natural resources, also holds significant potential to contribute to economic growth. The islands’ soils are highly calcareous and sandy, and the KVK’s operational area spans approximately 32 square kilometers across the 10 islands.
