The island has 10.42 lakh coconut palms and majority of the harvesting is performed by climbers who migrate from Kerala. Each and every farmer/ household hires these climbers for harvesting. The influx of coconut climbers from mainland has increased gradually in the island. These climbers find employment opportunity in the island when youth and labour say that they are unemployed. It is an accepted fact that the youth and labour is in search for avenues for employment in the islands. Agriculture and fisheries are the two important resources that can provide employment opportunities to the islanders. Identifying these issues the KVK worked with Coconut Development, Kochi and approached for funding. The board was ready to support the KVK by approving a skill development training “Friends of Coconut Tree (FOCT)”- the most popular six day training across the country. With this support and funding KVK organized five 6 day training in Kavaratti, Agatti, Amini, Androth and Kadmat islands under the initiative “100 Coconut Climbers and Machines”. In each island 20 youth were selected for attending the training. The pedagogy of the training included both theory and practical modules covering all management aspects of Coconut. The intended activity was towards developing these youth as the para technicians for providing extension advisory services to the farmers apart from coconut climbing. The youth were trained on using the coconut climbing machines on all days of the training. The trainings ended with a competition on climbing trees with the machines. Under this initiative KVK developed 100 climbers by providing coconut climbing machines on free of cost towards by owning a machine. The KVK invested the funds of Coconut Development Board and worked on this important skill Development. KVK is supporting the climbers with refresher trainings.
