Pineapple as an intercrop in coconut gardens

The demonstration of Pineapple as an intercrop in coconut gardens was initiated at a large scale by KVK duringthis reporting period. The demonstration was extended to six islands in farmer’s field, which was a larger effort. The suckers of pineapple were procured from ICAR-CPCRI and about 1500 suckers of pineapple have been shipped to KVK by ICAR-CPCRI for the next round of planting in other islands. The introduction of pineapple as an intercrop in Coconut gardens was done for the first time in the island at the farmer’s field. However, there has been a trace of work done in Minicoy islands by ICAR-CPCRI to introduce pineapple in Coconut gardens long back. KVK is trying to catch up the practice to be brought in as a fruit of choice to the islanders. The end results of this activity will be helpful to recommend the UT administration to scale up the practice in a larger extent. The fruiting of pineapple has been observed and results will be provided during 2022-23.
