Shri George Kurian, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs & Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India, visited Kavaratti Island today, 10 June 2025, to participate in the 13thday of the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan (VKSA). The event, jointly organised by KVK-Lakshadweep, ICAR-CMFRI, the Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Fisheries, UT Administration of Lakshadweep, aimed to further enhance agricultural and fisheries development in the islands.
The Minister’s visit highlighted the Government of India’s commitment to the holistic development of the Union Territory, particularly focusing on the welfare of farmers and fishermen. The VKSA initiative played a crucial role in disseminating advanced agricultural practices, providing advisory services, and fostering sustainable livelihoods in the region.
On this occasion, officials of the UT administration, including Shri. Buzar Jamhar, DANICS, Director, Dept of Agriculture and Fisheries, UT Administration of Lakshadweep, and Shri. Raj Tilak, IFS, Secretary (Agriculture), UT Administration of Lakshadweep, delivered addresses highlighting the collaborative efforts in promoting agricultural growth.
A significant part of the program was the distribution of small machines and machinery to farmers and farmer groups, supported by the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) of ICAR-CMFRI. This initiative aimed to empower farmers with modern tools for increased productivity.
The Minister engaged in a direct interaction session with local farmers and fishermen, providing a platform for them to voice their concerns, share their experiences, and receive direct feedback.
Shri. George Kurian delivered the Chief Guest and Inaugural Address, sharing his vision for the development of the fisheries and agriculture sectors in Lakshadweep and reaffirming the government’s support.
